Video publishing co Ooyala named after Telugu word. Interesting!
I was searching though the web on how to monetize the original video content produced by Southscope. The Southscope Style Awards & ‘making of’ footage of our photoshoots are some of our IP (intellectual property) I wish to host online and monetize. I stumbled across this popular video publishing platform Ooyala, which lets publishers like us put their video content online on different platforms and monetize it. On first hearing of the name, it sounded like the telugu word oo-yah-la, which means a swing or cradle. I thought it was a mere co-incidence as web 2.0 companies come up with obscure or invented words for brand names such as – Guba, Meebo, Squido, Flickr, Digg amongst others. But, as I explored the site, I visited their ‘About’ and realized their name is actually derived from the telugu word ooyala, which means cradle. Even more surprising is that none of their founders are people of Telugu or Indian origin! I presume a branding agency might have suggested the name, or they would have bumped into it while surfing the net. They liked the name because they felt it demonstrates what their company is doing – cradling a new form of innovation.
While naming brands or companies, I usually avoid Indian words as very few sound ‘brandable’. Also very few Indian words are ‘universal’ in nature like shastra, sutra, avatar or karma. Also, I felt names Shaadi, Baazee, JeevanSathi, Naukri or Masti doesn’t translate well across cultures in India. I myself dint know what Baazee meant till some one told me. Nor what the much-used ‘Jugaad’ meant for that matter, though I learnt Hindi in school. Also spelling them makes it harder. The brand is spelled as JeevanSathi, but ’sathi’ is pronounced as ’saa-thi’. Also if Jugaad or Masti have an H as they’re pronounced ”ju-gaadh” or “mas-thee”. Hence I stick to English words. My magazine’s is name Southscope, a word I came up with. I coined the name “Green Channel Forex” to my aunt who setup a travel & forex agency. Also, suggested my friend Madhu Mantena the name “Cinergy Productions” (cinema – synergy) for his film production company. I came up with another English word for one of the new businesses I am setting up. But, its quite surprising that some body at the other end of the globe actually considered a telugu name for their business. Hop over to Ooyala (http://www.ooyala.com/about) and have a look at their site. Hope the name works for their brand.

I would say checkout si’s swimsuit shoot. Or forced ads like dailyshow.com.
…. so try to getting it from ads. Idlebrain.com makes 3K a day just from google ads. Which is not bad.
Dont try to put a membership to view the content. People dont like paid content. Esp. telugus
Sirish,
The other day Film actor Raja approached Human Rights Commission stating that “Theatres in the State are controlled by few big names like SureshBabu,Allu Arvind,Dil Raju”, and he also stated that “Small films are not getting release in more theatres due to these big names”.
what answer do you give for this on behalf of Geetha Arts?
As and admirer of Chiranjeevi sir and your family I am expecting an answer that his allegations are false.
but as an admirer of telugu cinema I truly feel we should not kill small cinema.
Hi Sirish,
I’m glad and happy for South scope…
At the same time I’m Enlighten to inform you that in Hyderabad 50% are of from middle class and they belong to Mass categeory and they want everything for free free and free….none of them want to paid membership…if you want to publish it for free you get more reviews than the readers…and if you say its a paid membership then those 20% who are above middle class and 30% are poor in this Hyderbad..It shows like you want southscope to be read by only 20% of hyderabad.
I had a glance on your southscope, which ever the link you open it directs you out of the world but not to the content you want to read…
You want your magzine and your photo shoot and your videos to be watched by 20% of Andhra people or hyderabad people…or your work should be appreciated by everyone?…
As far as I know idlebrain makes huge money as each and every mass and class adicted to that site..
I know a driver who have done his 10th class and he just go to internet just to see hero pics…he says that he came to know that idlebrain is everything to go to Cineinduatry and he started to browse that site and he made atleast 100 of his friends to go through that site….
I would like to share my IDEA with you…
why dnt you publish the same in your Blog and make your blog too Official and readers have lot of fun watching your photo shoot and they get more knowledge on south scope…try this for 2-3 months and then if your not satisfied then you can go to OOYALA….
I wish you ALL THE BEST which ever the decision you make ….
I am nt expert…but just pen downed my view on this…
-Cheers,
Tina
Hey Sirish,
Good to hear that a Telugu word has been chosen by CA based company. The only possible reason I could think of naming after “OOyaLa” is, it sounds pretty similar to “gOOgLe” and even the logo is bit similar to Google’s.
Coming to Digital content protection there are already white papers published on “Digital Rights Management” which impose a lot of restrictions on digital content. This is mainly useful for television market where the set-top box service provider can digitally restrict his content from getting distributed or misused.
There should be atleast a “disclaimer” when people use some digital content which is not theirs. For example a TV channel showing your magazine’s photo shoot should atleast put a disclaimer saying that the content is not owned by them and taken from south scope.
But putting such restrictions will have pros and cons. Pros could be that you can sue somebody if you think they have used your digital content and make some money as well. On the flip side, it cuts down the publicity.
For example a lot of people might have come to know about your Southscope magazine not just from your inaugural function but mostly watching it on TV or on some other website especially the calendar photo shoots. This is free publicity for your magazine which cuts down your cost that needs to be spent on magazine publicity.
Thx,
Venkat Duvvuru
Got to say anything on Raja’s allegations??
