The Political Economy of Telugu News Industry, a report by Padmaja Shaw

TV9 NTV iNews Mahaa TVMs Padmaja Shaw is an Associate Professor, Dept of Communications and Journalism at the Osmania University. I have run across a analytical study made by her titled “Political Economy of Telugu News Industry” had caught my eye. It was a lengthy, but a worthy read. The author has made very interesting observations on the ‘business’ of news television in Andhra Pradesh. Since its made for academic purpose, the first 10 pages are highly theoretical. But the report is very informative and enlightening towards the end. I highly recommend it for observers of media & politics.

Some of the highlights are :

(1) The owners of present Telugu channels
(2) Low costs to setup and run news channels
(3) Why news is hyper-local, caste based & crime-driven.

The author rightly identifies the capital expenditure to setup a channel and the cost to run it is pretty. The cost of programming for 30 minutes for an entertainment channel is almost 10 times that of a news channel. The report observes that nearly 6 news channels we’re launched before elections in the state to ride on its wave. Without naming, the report identifies Mr. Chiranjeevi and Nagarjuna as stake holders in Maa Television Network, which is true. But it misreports that Chiranjeevi’s family owns or runs Local TV, which is untrue.

Tammudu – Do you have a ghost writter or is everything that you are publishing in your blog coming out from your keyboard. In case if the later is true you have a great carreer ahead for you.

Coming to the point, Chiranjeevi gaari’s family do not have a outspoken personality other than Pawan Kalyan gaaru. It seems to me that you are following the footsteps of him, which is great. You have gone to the extra length in your approach in the way you are counter replying the idiots that write unwarrented replies at your blog.

Can you increase the frequency of your writeups @allusirish.in? Inkonchem PUNCH penchina parledu – ee N-Fans vallu ippude nee meedha direct attack antunnaru.. nuvvu nee stylo rechipo. Keep communicating more often over here.

Very nice observation indeed. Viewers are now watching and reading news to see the reactions and retaliations of their owners against the accusations made by their counter parts. But don’t you think this is a huge opportunity for serious unbiased channels?

Hey, you made a mistake: It’s ”theoretical”.Please correct it.I started reading your blog since last week. I liked this template, but didn’t knew the method to add it in my CSS editor. I want to congratulate you for starting south scope magazine. And I have a small request.I am a fan of Jr NTR and also Allu Arjun. They both dance exceptionally well, and their performances have been great till now. Could you please find out your brother’s opinion on whether he would accept to do a multi-starrer with NTR.

This is pretty much an open secret. Most political parties, either directly or indirectly, have their own news paper or news channel or both. Even media barons seem to succumb to political pressures. Of late, the much celebrated 36-year old news paper has been really quite fearing attacks on properties owned by it in the outskirts of Hyderabad. Unfortunately, these biased media sources are the only window for the common man to get to know the current affairs.

I hope you continue to write on more social issues like this. Given your reach, I am sure this might attract lot of interest.

Sridhar – I have posted it on twitter as you told you follow me. This is not the appropriate forum for this topic. Yet since you’re asking : We’re looking at a summer 2010 release. Its not confirm. May get postponed depending on conditions.

hi SIRISH… it s nice to communicate with you. I am following your blog from past 1 week. But i have a small request to you, will u plzz stop BOXOFFICE collection discussions. According 2 me it s useless. Discuss about the failure of telugu cinema in producing award winning films. .

  10. Sirsih

    I have one straight question.

As we are all aware, the media especially TV channels are purposely not covering Chiru. Why don’t you guys start your own new channel?
