Boxoffice Showdown : Adhurs v/s Magadheera (Week 2)

In continuation of my last week’s post, here’s the showdown between the two movies in the second week. The movie with the biggest opening week need not necessarily be the highest grossing film. Avatar opened to a modest $77 million opening, which is half of The Dark Knight’s $158 million opening. Yet in the longer run, though both films are blockbusters, Avatar was able to generate a higher gross.

Pokiri despite being the highest grosser during its time, had a modest opening week of share around Rs 9 crores. It was dwarfed by Stalin’s 13 crore and Jalsa’s 16 crore opening week. Yet, in the full run Pokiri collected more than these two films. The opening weekend is a reflection of the actor and director’s crowd pulling capacity. The collections in the second week onwards decide the movie’s actual merit.

Area Magadheera Adhurs
Nizam 11,20,00,000 4,33,00,000
Ceeded 7,20,00,000 4,29,00,000
Utthar Andhra 2,30,00,000 1,92,00,000
Guntur 2,80,00,000 2,03,00,000
Krishna 1,90,00,000 1,42,00,000
East Godvari 1,72,00,000 1,64,00,000
West Godvari 1,83,00,000 1,60,00,000
Nellore 1,50,00,000 96,00,000
Total AP 30,36,00,000 18,19,00,000
Karntaka + Overseas - -

Correction made here : Magadheera collected a share of Rs 10.37 crore in the second week. Adhurs collected a share of Rs 3.83 crore in the second week. Adhurs has an added advantage of a public holiday mid-week (26th January, Republic Day), but had a revenue loss of two days in Nizam due to bandh in Telangana region. It’s common for a bid-budget film with a wide release to have a 50% drop in the 2nd week. This is thumb rule in the Telugu, Hindi and Hollywood boxoffice, leaving exceptions. Smaller or mid-budget movies which release in lesser screens witness a lesser drop. Those movies make small amounts of money consistently over a long period of time after getting a hit talk. If the movie sustains this collections without a further drop it can go on the become NTR’s highest grossing film, or 2nd place after Yamadonga.

PS : The comparison seems to have offended the sensibilities of a lot of people, while a lot of them are happy. My intention is only to inform and defend my film, not offend others. If I unintentionally did, kindly dont take it to heart. I am yet to decide whether to discontinue as its sensitive to some people.

Adhurs is a mix up of Mugguru monagallu, and Hello brother. But Magadheera is a never made before film in Telugu cinema history. So, this comparision is in-valid.

    Thanks,
    Venki

@Sirish – it is great that you give the insider details of the box office performances. but a friendly advice – you should just stop at giving the data, and do not let yourself into the arguments and fan wars with confrontational responses to your visitors. even if u think u r just a 22 yr old with an opinion, you are not. ur words may be considered as reflective of Chiru’s. Not good for Chiru, your self or the fans in general.

  3. Kiran Jagilinki says:

@ Abhi.. check your stats again.. Simhadri never ran in 52 centers for 175 days ( I am not sure of the accurate figure.. but 52 is way bloated over the head)..

You were right.. movies shouldn’t be compared and Sirish didnt get the numbers for comparision. Its just a showdown. It just tells you the numbers.. it will not compare the movie merits or what ever. IT IS JUST THE NUMBERS! This game was started by other producers when they released inflated numbers just to be on the NEWS.

Comparing movies is very difficlut.. unless they come under the same genre.. (this is the wide spread perception.. and to a great extent its true.) Coming to Andhra Pradesh, we dont have that luxury where we have stars venturing into different genres (that’s an absolute rarity) and so you always have the same stuff repeated time and again. So.. if you have to compare.. you gotta compare with what you have.

Coming to your second point.. you mentioned about Sirish’s reference on Dark Knight vs. Avatar. Dark Knight got that initial just because people wanted to see it on the big screen.. as it had multiple scenes involved with IMAX camera. The reason it got a great numbers on the first week attirbutes to multiple things –
    1) Revival of the franchise by Mr. Cristopher Nolan with Batman Begins. The movie had a good run collecting about 200 million in North America.. but did phenomenal in DVD circuit.. creating the much needed anticiapation of the next part. ( You have to notice that Batman was almost dead.. as we had some big bombs.. in the previous outings).

    2) Dark Knight had a unique marketing technique.. where they started publishing Gotham Times at all major theaters and people used to read it and got the gist of both the Batman and Joker.

    3) Joker is one of the most famous villians in Batman and has a cult status which is on par with the hero himself.

    4) Heath Ledger…due to his sudden demise before the movie got released and because of his OScar winning performance.. the movie just out did every other movie ever released.

    5) Mr. Nolan is coming up with another one called Inception.. do you think that movie will have such out of the world opening figures? So is for Christian Bale. They have to wait till we get the next part in this franchise.

Coming to Avatar.. its a very very very unique film.. which captured 3d technology in a new way. However.. if you check that on a normal 2d screen.. it is still a great movie (I did see it.. and so you can). Dark Knight was a phenomenon in North America.. but it just grossed closed to 500 million dollars in rest of the world markets. The reason being.. Dark Knight is more of a local hero..

Coming to Avatar.. it conquered every market possible.. check boxofficemojo or any other site to look at its foriegn movie break down.

Avatar is a great movie.. and it did its numbers not just because.. people wanted to watch it in theaters only.. it is becuase its a breathtaking movie. This movie has the smallest percentage drops ever known.. and is breaking every record on a weekly basis.

I used to wonder will there be any movie which can repeat Titanic’s magic on the percentage drops and total domination (Dark Knight even though it had such a huge number on first week.. dropped more than 50% on second week).
Opening numbers just tell you on how strong your franchise is (in our case how strong the actor is). Even Twilight broke the opening day record of Dark Knight… and almost threatened to break Dark Knight’s opening.. but couldn’t. So even though the movie made a huge profits.. there was a huge disappointment even with the fans.. becuase of the tacky direction and graphics.
I wonder how it would fare in its next outing which is due this year. I am gonna watch for that.

Releasing a movie as a wide release is something common in US.. but not in AP (bollywood followed it way back)… untill Jalsa came in. This was a new concept when no one knew that we could do this in AP. Once Jalsa got released and the numbers rolled out.. everyone followed the same trend.

Every movie has its success by itself. Pokiri’s success is credited to Mahesh/Puri/Mani Sharma. Everything fell in the right place at the right time.. they had a great script.. perfect performances.. and bingo.. you got a blockbuster. Mahesh/Puri.. still weren’t able to replicate that magic again…

Same is for Tagore…. Credit goes to Chiru/Vinayak/muragadoss (for story). Stalin didn’t do good because it wasnt syncing gelling with our audience.

Lastly.. a movie is released with the only intention to attract people to the theaters. It doesn’t consider the fact that will it be a good DVD movie or a good theater movie. Magadheera is not a fully graphic oriented movie.. agreed the 40 minutes of the movie is the crux of the entire film.. but you have to under stand.. you still have about another 140 mins left out. No one can deny how charming Cherry was looking… and also his exceptional horse riding abilities which matched KalaBhairva’s character to the T.

Now that you told us that Magadheera can only be watched in theaters.. once DVD releases.. lets see how it fares..(Sirsh… please post the DVD sales figures as well.. if you have access to the numbers)

to culminate my lengthy reply.. Dark Knight didn’t do as expected in the dvd blu-ray market.. even thought people had greatly anticipated. (I was waiting at Wal-Mart to get my copy on the day of its release).,.. Transformers first part did excpetionally well.. on DVDs.. and none could match the numbers of Finding Nemo.

@sirish:Firstly, budget of Yamadonga was less. NTR’s slim personality, star image, amazing dance performances and excellent acting skills pulled the audience to the theaters and the film became a super-hit.Though Rajamouli’s direction, technical brilliance, graphics were excellent, the real icing on the cake was provided by Tarak.I meant, he dominated the film than other departments by his wonderful performances. And we all are aware how his dialogue-delivery in Yamalok made audience to clap. And he did really well in Nachore… song(tough dance). His flexibility in dancing could be improved if he concentrates on body-building(example:Hrithik). I’m a big fan of Bunny too. I rate him No.1 WESTERN DANCER in Tollywood. He got a good personality and his superb flexibility gets reflected in his every dance step, but NTR is No. 1 CLASSICAL DANCER. And the duo are the top dancers of Tollywood.

Coming to Adhurs, it’s Brahmi for sure who gave good support to NTR. Even if one character would have been missing, then the comedy track couldn’t had impressed us. So the credit goes to both. And NTR being gotten this CREDIT; it increases cumulatively because of his splendid performances through the other character also. Above all I say that Adhurs is an above average flick. But it would be nice if NTR comes up with different kinds of roles as Adhurs has a routine story.Though Chary’s role was different and good. Last week, I saw V.V.Vinayak’s interview on i-news. He told that ”though Adhurs is an old-story-film, there are new elements which impress you.” And it has been correct. But apart from commercial flicks, it would be nice if our Tollywood actors switch to different kinds of films like Taare Zameen Par, Avatar,Surya S/O Krishnan, 7/G Brindavan Colony, Rang De Basanti, 3 Idiots, Swades,Lakshya, Gamyam etc. They are message-oriented as well as path-breakers. Hope that Bunny’s ‘Vedham’ would fill another empty void in Tollywood. And our actors must be courageous to experiment different roles. In this regard, I want to appreciate your brother’s choice of accepting a psychic character(don’t mind) in Aarya-2 which is very different. I liked it:)

Note:Rather than arguments, these are my opinions.Thank you.

Hey guys…………………All AP knows what is Magadheera and what is Adurs?

  6. Khakha says:

Sirish, stop responding to every tom and dick, a personality of ur stature need not to fight with some dumbos, leave it to fans.

  7. holydevil says:

Pokiri made more money in long run..and Yamadonga has broken all the records existed then in terms of single theatre records..As Mr.Sirish said records are meant to be broken..Magadheera is truly an epic movie and it is not fair to compare such kinda movie with a normal commercial entertainer..Adhurs was good and it is just because of NTR it is able to sustain..Magadheera’s success was a team effort and everybody in the unit shud be given due credit..

One more thing Magadheera has got a repeat value of audience which resulted in extraordinary revenues in the long run…

Pokiri had a dream run of 175 days in 59 centers whereas Magadheera could manage just 3 centers..
Every movie has got its own pros and con..and in the present scenario it is a mammoth achievement for any film if it could manage a 50 day run in theatres with 60% of audience…

Pokiri created an all time record with a 4 show housefull run for 66 days continuously…

Im sure that Adhurs would be highest grosser in NTR’s movies till date and will manage to reach to an extent as far as Magadheera’s records are concerned…

Long live TELUGU CINEMA..lets show the stamina of Telugu cinema to the World..Magadheera,Adhurs,Pokiri whatver it is..
