Boxoffice Showdown : Magadheera v/s Adhurs

homeimgeFirstly, I wish to congratulate V.V Vinayak, NTR Jr on their smashing hit Adhurs. I am happy that the telugu film industry started its new year with two successes – Adhurs and Namo Venkatesa. There were ‘panel discussions’ in telugu news channels if Adhurs would beat Magadheera’s collections. Most ended in a deadlock. Instead of hoping “Truth shall prevail”, I thought I’d do my bit my publishing the real numbers from the trade. Let them do the talking. Mentioned below are the first week ‘shares’ and not the ‘gross’.  Incidentally, today (21st January 2010) is the 175th day of Magadheera (click here, to enlarge poster).

Area Magadheera Adhurs
Nizam 7,10,00,000 (100 prints) 3,02,00,000 (60 prints), 8 day share – Rs 3.12 crore
Ceeded 4,63,00,000 3,38,00,000
Utthar Andhra 1,80,00,000 1,59,00,000
Guntur 1,92,00,000 1,67,00,000
Krishna 1,26,00,000 1,16,00,000
East Godvari 1,01,00,000 1,35,00,000
West Godvari 1,24,00,000 1,30,00,000
Nellore 1,03,00,000 89,00,000
Total AP 19,99,00,000 14,36,00,000

Also, there are factors that affect the collections that need to be taken into mind while comparing. Magadheera had more prints in Nizam, and released during normalcy. Where as, for Godavari districts Adhurs had the advantage of a price-hike in tickets which Magadheera did not. Adhurs opened during Pongal season, with competition while Magadheera opened in a non-peak season without competition.

I have given replies to a lot of comments at the end of this page, or click here. Kindly have a look at this for an extended discussion on this article. There are lot of arguments and queries and my counter-arguments and replies to them.

Being a distributor, I understand records are meant to be broken and don’t last forever. I am keen to see which telugu movie would cross Magadheera’s full run collections. I personally would also appreciate the fall of its records, because it means that those collections are not a once-a-decade phenomenon but a testament to the increased revenue potential of a telugu film.

PS : The fastest way to break any boxoffice record is to buy a full-page ad in a telugu film magazine and publish any figure you want. It instantly gains credibility and become the ‘official figure’.

    Dear Sirish ,

Can we call it as Silver Jubileee ???
PS : The fastest way to get silver jubilee is spend sone money to hold theator where rent is very low and buy a full-page ad in a telugu film magazine and publish . It instantly gains credibility and become the ‘official Silver Jubilee.

    Sirish garu,
As a owner of a magazine it is not good to target another magazine. Its very rude.
superhit magazine published Maghadheera records every week.Does it mean that you bought a page
    every week.

kudos …its the new generation telugu movie maker …its the way to put
modesty and challenging goes hand in hand with this guy with guts and gray matter

keep rocking as u said hope some NTR/ MAHESH /PAWAN/ PRABHAS/ ARJUN/ SHYAM PRASAD / M.S.RAJU/ DIL RAJU / SURESH/ yourself will soon cross the record of the legendary MAGADHEERA like it did equally entertaining legendary POKIRI. But amhoping that will be a quality product which we can proudly beat our chest infront of bigger bollywud like we did for pokiri and magadheera.

i request u to write about something which is hurting me a lot ….like WANTED being called remake of tamil film POKKIRI…its credit ignored by telugus while fighting among ourselves.

    Sirish,

First of all, you are doing a great Job. You are the first one from the Telugu Film Industry to start a blog. Your Posts in the blog are really good & I wonder how at this age you are so mature with your posts. The way you write [typos should not be considered] is really good and it is even simple that anyone who reads it can easily understand.

Regarding this Post, you should definitely be appreciated bcoz of two things.

Firstly you are the one who came out publicly with a post on the facts about the two movies.
I believe the content published is true bcoz I was following all the posts you had written & they seemed to be simple and true.

Seconly bcoz of the guts & confidence you have, to challenge in making movies that can
even beat magadheera records/adurs[if adurs does beat magadheera records]. How many
producers do have these guts? I know, wonders can be created only when you have the courage and you are really interested and confident on what you are doing. Who had known the potential of a Telugu cinema till Magadheera had released? Was there any producer [Syam Prasad reddy is an exception] who could afford such huge investment on a Telugu Film Product.

Come on guys there has been lot of innovation put in this guy Sirish in the field of marketing and film making too, & we as a Telugu Film lovers should really appreciate him. They had even shown our capabilities to the North. I feel proud when those guys talk about the greatness of our movies being made in par with their standards. If you look closely Magadheera even exceeded their [Bollywood]standards.

I again congragulate the efforts you are taking in improving the standards of TF & their ways of marketing the films. My wishes to your brother too since he is also breaking the monotonous way of acting in films that are routine. Arya2 is an example and I believe there are many too in the pipe
which is not made keeping the old formula of Telugu Movies.

  5. Ram says:

What do you mean by saying price-hike advantage for Adurs?

Is not that Maghadheera has the same advantage over Pokiri?

    Pokiri over NuvveKaavali?

Nuvvekaavali over olden-golden hits like Missama, mayabazaar?

  6. NS Naidu says:

@ I personally would also appreciate the fall of its records, because it means that those collections are not a once-a-decade phenomenon but a testament to the increased revenue potential of a telugu film.
Very good, being a business person you are looking in a positive way. It is better if every common telugu cine goer start thinking like that. We can enjoy each and every telugu cinema without any ego.

  7. Kishore says:

    @Pkumar
you are talking about Greater Adoni..it shows how much you have idea. Adoni itself is a medium sized town and you expect greater Adoni :-( . i have to say thanks to you for not specifying PVR also in greater Bangalore..
if you can spend some money and hold MD should have gone in record number of theaters.. come on guys it already collected 100 C gross and released over 1000 theaters and still u expect to run 175 days in 50 theaters :-(

  8. Allu Sirish says:

Reg supporting Magadheera : Where did I conceal that I trumpeting Magadheera’s achievements? The very headline shows I want to prove what our movie’s worth is.

Reg movie figures in magazines : We (Geetha Arts) and many other producers of big films DONT publish our movie collections. The magazine owners ‘embedd’ the collections on the ad thru Photoshop and publish it. They do this to appease fans and movie-buffs.

Reg magazines and false collections – Telugu magazines solely rely on producer’s ads (unlike newspapers, english magazines). So, they’re obliged to carry what the producer gives. Also, how can media cross-check. Film trade is not transparent.

How I got these figures : We have a distribution office which gathers stats of every movie, in every area. This comes in a report called DCR (daily collection report). Even our movie’s real collections lie with other distributors. Though outsiders cant get access to it, within the trade – everybody knows the other’s numbers.

@ Srikanth : Pokiri’s share is only 36 crores all-India. The ticket price dint double, but increase by 10-15%. Even taking that into consideration, more people watched Magadheera than they did Pokiri.

@ Prasad : If thats the case, then Adhurs is VVV films not NTR’s. Please come up with a better arguement.

@ Onlytruth : Adhurs beat Avatar collections in the first week itself. Ohh? Are you comparing it with Avatar worldwide collections (Rs 5000 crores plus)??

@Darthwader : Dont cleverly club Bollywood with Hollywood and try to portray your movies as superior. They also churn out as much as trash as we do. The biggest supplier of storylines to Hindi cinema is telugu films.

@BG London : I throw the challenge back at you. Prove my collections are wrong. IF Adhurs beat Magadheera’s collections – what is there for me to accept? The public have given thier verdict. Will me not accepting make any difference?

@ Hari : I concur with you. Being a businessman I need not reveal every truth, but I would like to be as transparent as possible. Google, Facebook and today’s big corporations in-principle aspire to be honest about thier business.

@PKumar : Using your same arguement – most of Simhadri’s silver jubilee centers also C centers, where you pay Rs 1000 per day as rent to run on empty theatres. Atleast we dont do that. The movie ran on its own merit.

@ Daggubati Suresh : I agree with your Suresh, I should not point fingers, but couldnt help as most fans come up with these hyped up collections published on telugu magazines. I answered your question above. Check it.

@ Dr SVKC : You dont know how much I feel sorry that we Telugu people always fight amongst ourselves, instead of being united. I want to see Telugu Cinema prosper. And in that, I prefer seeing myself leading the way.

@Ram : The distributors of Adhurs were able to hike thier tickets to Rs 100 on the first few days, as the collectors in those districts allowed. They did not let Magadheera do it. The reasons are obvious – politically motivated.

    @ Lakshmi Narayana P :

    1) Which hero? I dont know tell me. Also prove the same.
    2) Which hero again? I dont know. Fans of our heroes started magazines meant for fellow-fans. We dont own any telugu film magazine (so far).
    3) I replied your answer above. We never published stats on telugu magazines. They themselves over-enthusiastically did it.
    4) If you use the same logic – Simhadri also had C centers as silver jubilee centers.
    5) Already answered.
    6) You can hike collections in the 1st week, and adjust in the coming weeks so that you dont pay more tax than what your film collected.
    7) I never claimed we’re noblest. We publish our collections. Its all over english press, telugu press, TV and internet. Check them.
8} I published this in my blog. Not on my magazine. How do you know that your fave mag is publishing wrong numbers and I am publishing the right ones? Prove my numbers wrong if you can. OPEN CHALLENGE!

I will not let go of any chance of defending my family or our films. I never denied I have an agenda in publishing this article. I only said these numbers are real unlike what you read elsewhere. Also, I gave you the challenge to prove my numbers wrong.
